Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Allergen Immunotherapy?

Allergen Immunotherapy is a 100% natural medication and the most reliable and effective means of desensitizing your body to allergens, the substances that can cause an allergic reaction. In some people, the immune system thinks allergens are foreign or dangerous. Known as antigens, these substances may be foreign substance from the environment, such as chemicals, bacteria, viruses, or pollen, or may be formed inside the body, as with bacterial toxins or tissue cells. Both cause the immune system to produce antibodies against it, and when an antigen attaches itself to your body’s cells, you experience a bad reaction depending on your sensitivity to that specific antigen.

Through proper testing and treatment formulation using Allergen Immunotherapy, your body will learn to build its immunity to these allergies, lessening their effects and improving daily life. Most treatments you receive do not interfere with prescribed allergy treatments and our allergy technician and your physician may explain this process in more detail.

Q: Which allergies do you test for?

We care about your health and the overall satisfaction of your daily life. Our practice tests for the most allergies specific to a region, including common allergens such as cedar, oak, grasses, and proteins from pets, dust, insects, molds, and pollens. Our physicians will offer the best solution for your individual allergy relief.

Q: How is Immunotherapy administered?

Once your test results are reviewed and immunotherapy has been chosen, your allergy technician will compound the
individual medications in increased dosages so the body can overcome allergies in time.

Q: How long does this test take?

Once scheduled for a test, it usually only takes 15 minutes to visually identify your allergies and document your test results. Skin Testing is the oldest and most reliable form of allergy testing and our method is the most reliable and convenient system available to identify your specific allergies and their severity. Our improved and modern testing technique is administered without the pain, cutting, or pricking of past skin test methods. Patients will notice small raised irritations associated with the allergic reaction to the specific antigens tested.

Q: How long will the Immunotherapy treatment last?

Results vary for each individual. However, many people report allergy symptom relief in less than three months. The initial course of Immunotherapy is one year, but full immunity to allergens can take from one to five years.

Q: Who can be tested?

Adults and children over the age of two can be tested for allergies, but women who are pregnant and/or breast-feeding, patients with uncontrollable asthma, and patients medicating with beta-blockers are discouraged from testing. However, if their health care provider has completed a short physical exam and cleared the patient, testing is allowed.

Q: Are Immunotherapy and allergy testing covered by my insurance?

Yes, the majority of private and government insurance programs cover both allergy testing and Immunotherapy. Patient
benefit coverage will be verified prior to testing and treatment.

Facts & Figures

Allergies in America

Prevalence

asthma-allergy

From the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America: https://www.aafa.org
  • An estimated 50 million Americans (1 in 5) suffer from some type of allergy, including indoor/outdoor, food and drug, latex, insect, skin, and eyes. The overall number of allergy sufferers has been increasing since the early 1980s across all age, sex, and racial groups, and many people have more than one type of allergy.
  • Allergy is the 5th leading chronic disease in the U.S. among all ages, and the 3rd most common chronic disease among children under 18 years old.
  • Indoor and Outdoor Allergies – Approximately 40 million Americans have indoor/outdoor allergies as their primary allergy, including allergic rhinitis, seasonal/perennial allergies, hay fever, and other nasal allergies. The most common indoor/outdoor allergy triggers are: tree, grass and weed pollen; mold spores; dust mite and cockroach allergen; and cat, dog, and rodent dander. Approximately 10 million people are allergic to cat dander, the most common pet allergy.
  • Skin Allergies – Approximately 7% of allergy sufferers have skin allergies as their primary allergy, including atopic dermatitis, eczema, hives, urticarial, and contact allergies. Plants such as poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac are the most common skin allergy triggers, however skin contact with cockroach and dust mite allergen, certain foods, or latex may also trigger symptoms of skin allergy.

Morbidity

  • Allergies are the most frequently reported chronic condition in children, limiting activities for more than 40%.
  • Each year, allergies account for more than 17 million outpatient office visits, primarily in the spring and fall. Seasonal allergies account for more than half of all allergy visits.
  • Skin allergies account for more than 7 million outpatient visits each year.
  • Food allergies account for 30,000 visits to the emergency room each year.
  • Exposure to the latex allergen is responsible for over 200 cases of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions) annually.

Social and Economic Costs

  • The annual cost of allergies is estimated to be nearly $14.5 billion.
  • Nearly 85% ($12.3 billion) is for direct costs, including $1.3 billion for doctor office visits and $11 billion for medications ($7 billion prescription, $4 billion over-the-counter).
  • Indirect costs of allergy (missed work or school, lost productivity, death, etc.) account for approximately $2.2 billion (15%) of the total annual cost of allergies in the U.S.
  • For adults, allergies (hay fever) is the 5th leading chronic disease and a major cause of work absenteeism and “presenteeism,” resulting in nearly 4 million missed or lost workdays each year and a total cost of more than $700 million in total lost productivity.

Allergy is a valuable solution for physicians to offer their patient base, regardless of age and can add a strong and consistent revenue stream for your practice.
