DVT Prevention

Blood clots have long been a silent killer in the medical industry. Traditionally, clotting disorders have routinely been treated pharmacologically. DVT affects 2 million people each year and causes 300,000 deaths annually. Medications used, frequently have drug to drug or drug to food interactions, side effects of bruising and bleeding and a narrow therapeutic index. Until now, there has been little in the way of alternatives for prevention or cure for the clotting problems associated with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

Patients are at an increased risk of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) after surgery, especially major orthopedic surgeries. The highest risk is during the surgery and in the 14 days post-surgery. VTE is one of the biggest reasons for hospital readmission post-surgery and the most common preventable cause of hospital death.






The SCD Plasma Flow device provides a non-pharmacological alternate to anticoagulants and helps tailor preventive care for at risk patients. The device is also convenient for patients to use at home. The device can be worn comfortably while the patient is sitting, standing or laying down. Patients can use the device for 2 to 3 weeks post-surgery, when patients need it most, without the need to rent equipment.

Use of the Plasma Flow has been demonstrated to reduce the overall cost of an orthopedic episode with a bundled care initiative. The Plasma Flow is also the first FDA approved portable and tubeless device for prevention of DVT. It aids circulation, helps reduce postoperative pain and swelling and can expedite wound healing in the case of some leg ulcers.

How it works

  • Wrap the cuff snugly around each calf and secure with Velcro

  • Ensure correct placement

  • Turn the device on
  • Unit will inflate and deflate as specified by the desired programming
  • Patient wears the device as recommended for duration of treatment
